South Barlow Berries For over 20 years, Zina and Tony Martishev have owned and run South Barlow Berries in Canby, Oregon along with their eight children. They have partnered with OSU’s College of Agricultural Sciences to help test new cultivars of berries that produce the most flavorful berries available. One strawberry from their field is enough to never want a mass-market strawberry again. South Barlow Berries uses no-spray practices to allow the fruit and the soil to grow more healthy through use. The fruit that they produce is rarely equaled and never surpassed. U-pick is available once fruit is ripe, as well as a farm stand where fresh or frozen picked fruit can be purchased. Big Jalm has partnered with South Barlow Berries because of the dedication their whole family shows to growing high quality fruit using ethical practices and offering a loving environment.

  • Kotata | Jalm

Columbia Giant Obsidian Buy Now! Kotata The cooler cousin of the marionberry, the Kotata, in our eyes, reigns supreme. These dense, almost feral blackberries owe their lineage to the finest berries in the land; the boysen, the logan, and a few big black berries. We source these from a single berry patch in Aloha, OR.

  • Red Raspberry | Big Jalm

Loganberry Gold Raspberry Buy Now! Red Raspberry These hearty autumnal red raspberries burst with beautiful sweetness and acidity. The late, warm fall this year provided conditions for a perfectly balanced jalm. Try this with yogurt, fingerprint cookies, or basted all over chicken wings. Collected at South Barlow Berries in Canby, OR.

  • Columbia Beauty Blackberry | Jalm

Apricot Columbia Giant Buy Now! Columbia Beauty Creating new cultivars of fruit is science mixed with art and a dash of luck, coming together to create new plants with specific characteristics. Blackberries are selected based on how their canes grow (trailing or erect), with or without thorns, and the flavor, color, durability, and yield of the fruit, as well as traits to thrive in certain environments. Chad Finn , dedicated his career at OSU to these little berries and what makes them the way they are. He wrote scores of journal articles about berries and held 11 patents for new berry cultivars. Big Jalm has used several of the berries that he created, including Hall’s Beauty, also called the Columbia Beauty blackberry. The Columbia Beauty is “a new, early-ripening, high-quality, firm, and sweet thornless trailing blackberry (Rubus subg. Rubus Watson( source ))", first patented in 2017. Dr. Finn created a marionberry that is sweeter, plumper, and easier to pick. When we cooked it into jalm, it took on a characteristic we never expected. Upon tasting it the first time, Carl exclaimed, “This is pie!” The richness of the flavor, the firm, whole berries throughout, even the buttery flavor and crisp of the crust are all present with no fat, no dairy, and no flour. Try Columbia Beauty Blackberry Big Jalm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or mixed into a quinoa salad. Collected at South Barlow Berries in Canby, OR
